2012 Resolution 3

There should be an across-the-board consistent approach to issuing plaques for winners of contests.

There has been no plaque issued for the winner of the Best Use of Photography contest for the past two years. In the past we had issued plaques for the top three winners; three years ago, to save money, we issued a plaque only to the first place winner.

2012 Resolution 2

The Regional Representative shall to appoint a proxy associate that would be able to stand-in for the Regional Representative, and be able to step forward to take over the work of the Regional Rep should he be unable to fulfill his responsibilities.

The “proxy” associate shall be privy to all Regional Rep communications and information should it be necessary for him or her to step forward and therefore be bound by the rules of the National Board.

2012 Resolution 1

I propose we grant the student representative to the NPPA board the right to vote during the board meetings.

Students make up 12% of our membership. We value our student members enough to identify a student representative to the board, and bring that person to the annual board meeting - we should also give those student members the respect they deserve, and give that representative the right to vote!

2012 Annual Report of NPPA Vice President Mike Borland

In 2011 I attended the Annual Board Meeting in January in Durham, NC. At that meeting I was nominated and then elected Vice President. Throughout the year I attended monthly conference call meetings of the Executive Committee, taking notes and distributing them to the rest of the Board as a part of my role as Liaison between the Executive Committee and the Board. I also served as sort of a liaison with the TV BOP Photography and Editing contests as budget constraints forced changes in the judging of the contest. The 2012 BOP will feature online entries for the first time.

NPPA Secretary’s Annual Report

January 2012
Submitted by Denise McGill

As Secretary, I am a member of the Board of Directors, Governance Committee and Executive Committee.

The list of my activities, detailed below, is dry. In carrying out these duties, I have strived to increase transparency, to create a structure that makes it easy for members to access services and find places to volunteer. I’ve unofficially served as a point person for volunteers and elected leaders at all levels.

Regional reports for 2011

Most of the regions are struggling. Many of the websites are rarely updated or non-existent. Activities are rare and poorly attended. Frustration is high among most of the leadership and likely the membership as well.

There are obviously many issues affecting this; dwindling staffs (and NPPA membership), overworked employees, low morale and the fear of the future are among them. The industry and lives of our members is changing and uncertain. Unfortunately, it seems NPPA has slipped below the radar for most of these folks, especially at the regional level.

NPPA Web Committee report

Bob Carey (chair), Tom Kennedy, Chuck Gathard, Mindy Hutchinson, Jim Straight

The NPPA web committee has been active this past year refining our RFP (see appendix) for vendors interested in bidding for the NPPA website revitalization. With the RFP, we delineated the two different areas of the website – public (partially funded by ACA funds) and member specific (funded by the NPPA). Along with the request, we asked the bidders to also propose branding possibilities to enhance our presence as an organization vital to visual journalism.
