Shin Woong-Jae, a New York based photojournalist, was born in Seoul, South Korea. He majored Linguistics and also studied Semiotics in Korea University.
Upon humanities foundation, he started his career in marketing and brand strategy fields. After ten years of distinguished career, however, he decided to devote himself exclusively to the world of photography being inspired by W. Eugene Smith, Werner Bischof and Joseph Koudelka. He has since embarked on a long journey, enriching his vision and commitment as a photojournalist through the cultures he encounters and the lessons from his mentors.
He graduated from School of the International Center of Photography in New York, and he was awarded the ICP’s Director Fellowship during his studies in Documentary and Photojournalism course in 2012.
After finishing a full time internship at VII Photo Agency in New York in 2012, he started his professional career as a freelance photojournalist mainly focusing on social injustice issues. The Washington Post, GQ Korea and PhotoDot Magazine are among his clients.
