Billy Calzada is a photojournalist currently working for the San Antonio Express-News. He started his career at the El Paso Herald-Post, where he covered issues related to immigration, poverty, drug trafficking and other issues facing Hispanics in Texas and Mexico. During his stint as a freelancer photographer in 1998, he lived in Beirut, Lebanon, for a month while exploring issues of a country rebuilding after a deadly civil war and the Palestinian refugee situation. He then went on to the Orlando Sentinel, where he covered wildfires, Southern culture, NASCAR and many other subjects. At the San Antonio Express-News, he enjoyed covering the local community as well as national and international news and sports. He has covered the NBA San Antonio Spurs, the NFL Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, a Super Bowl, the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and many other events.
