NPPA's Video Best of Photojournalism contest for 2018 will have changes, adding new categories, especially for editing.
A newly-formed Video BOP Committee looked over all the categories finding ways to update some and eliminate others that were not heavily-entered. The committee consists of former BOP judges Joe Little from KGTV in San Diego; Megan Mackel from WDSU in New Orleans; Steve Rhodes from WHTR in Indianapolis; and Catherine Steward from WTVF in Nashville. They worked over the past few months with Editing Contest Chair Shawn Montano and Video BOP Contest Chair Merry Murray to make positive changes to the contest.
“We’re always looking for ways to make the Video BOP Contest bigger and better every year,” said Murray. “News is ever-changing, and we need to change the contest to keep up with those changes. Shawn and I are both looking forward to another record year of amazing entries.”
The Editing division is adding several new categories this year, including:
General Hard News Edit-Photographers Only
General Soft News Edit-Photographers Only
Soft Feature Edit-Photographers Only
Hard Feature Edit-Photographers Only
Soft Photo Essay Edit-Photographers Only
Photo Essays: Hard and Soft -photographers only
Solo Video Journalist Hard Edit
Solo Video Journalist Soft Edit
Social Edit Editors and Photographers (A short form story specially edited and formatted for viewing on a social media platform.)
The addition of these new categories will also change the makeup of Editor of the Year entries.
The Photography contest is eliminating the Conflict/Disaster category due to low entries. The Feature category divides into Soft and Hard Features, In-Depth is changing to Investigative, and new additions are a Live category and Solo Video Journalist In-Depth.
The addition of these new categories will also change the makeup of the Ernie Crisp Photographer of the Year, the Editor of the Year, and the Station of the Year entries.
You can see details on all of the categories on the Video Best of Photojournalism rules page.
The contest opens on Friday, January 5, 2018, at 11 a.m. EST with the final deadline for the video competition on Friday, January 26, 2018.
