An academic study is being conducted to learn how visual journalists face interference and constraints when working in the field and a researcher is seeking input from NPPA members.
Rachel Somerstein, an assistant professor of journalism at State University of New York at New Paltz, has done a preliminary study on how visual journalists can be hampered while doing their job by government and law enforcement officials, physical threats from unorganized mobs, restricted by regulations against photography or even from passers-by who question the journalists’ rights to photograph in public spaces.
Somerstein wants to quantify how often these things happen. You can contribute by answering this brief survey that should only take about 10 minutes to complete. Only the researcher will have access to the information collected.
