CAJUN CHICKEN CHASE Annual Cajun Courir de Mardi Gras in Mamou Louisiana. Participants ride on horseback across the rural landscape during the traditional practice of gathering ingredients for gumbo. Live chickens are thrown in the air and chased by costumed men. Some survive but others are mutilated or later die in the controversial practice that animal advocates consider inhumane. Although Louisiana became the last state to ban cockfighting under animal welfare laws, an exception was made for this event. Deep in the heart of Cajun country, three hours from New Orleans, residents fiercely embrace their heritage. Bands follow playing songs about cornbread and everyone gathers under the small town's one stoplight for a street dance to end the day.
