Maggie Steber
Maggie Steber has been a documentary photographer since 1978, working in over 40 countries. Her work has regularly appeared in magazines such as National Geographic, Life, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian and many other American and European publications.
Her work in Haiti earned her the prestigious Alicia Patterson Foundation Grant and the Ernst Haas Grant. A collection of the Haiti photographs was published as a book by Aperture, Dancing on Fire: Photographs from Haiti.
Most recently, Maggie took 3 and 1/2 years off from shooting to work as Assistant Managing Editor of Photography and the Features section of The Miami Herald. During her tenure she transformed the spot news and features coverage at the paper, and earned the department two Pulitizer Prize nominations and the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Elian Gonzalez story.
Maggie has a breathtaking list of honors, including the World Press First Prize in Spot News, Pictures of the Year first Prize for Magazine Documentary, the Leica Medal of Excellence, and the Overseas Press Club Award for Best Photographic Coverage from Abroad. She is a much sought after workshop leader and lecturer and has also become a photo consultant on newspaper redesigns with the Garcia Media Group.
