Why are you leaving KARE-TV for the Star Tribune…broadcast news for print/web/video news? That’s the question I’ve been asked a lot recently. To get a better perspective lets examine my past:
- While attending Fort Hays State University I worked for the school newspaper, yearbook, and University Relations Department. It was at FHSU that I discovered broadcast news and fell in love with it.
- I have over 20 years of TV news experience with stops at KSNC (Great Bend, KS), WIBW (Topeka, KS), WDAF (K.C., MO), and KARE (Minneapolis, MN)
- I’ve earned a few awards including regional Emmy’s, reg. SPJ’s, and reg./national Edward R. Murrow awards. I’m a 4-time reg. NPPA Photographer Of the Year and a nat. NPPA Runner-Up POY. While I was the Dir. of Photography at KARE-TV my staff won 4 NPPA Station of the Year awards and was runner-up twice.
- I’m a Poynter Institute Ethics Fellow, class of ’07.
- I’m a graduate of the Gannett Leadership Academy, where Gannett grooms chosen managers to become publishers. I was one of the first broadcast people brought into the program.
- I was on the Gannett camera committee that met with SONY while they were developing the XD Blu-Ray professional camera.
- My professional experience also includes TV news reporting and project producing, still photography, TV promotions and commercials, radio host/producer, Photoshop, and computer editing/graphics.
- I’ve spoken to college classes at the Univ. of Kan., FHSU, Univ. of St. Thomas, and the Univ. of Minnesota. I’ve also taught at several NPPA workshops and seminars.
So back to the question; why did I leave TV news for newspaper? One word…transformation. All my past experience will help me be part of the transformation that’s taking place in the latest world of information. And teaching here at the NPPA NewsVideo Workshop allows me to help students/professionals in their own transformation.
