I edit.

I see myself as a student of the craft of television storytelling. I like to use the tools I’ve gained over a decade in television to bring the stories from our lives to the screen.

My belief is good television is in the details. I work at keeping the small things that make us special in focus. Using strong pacing, shot selection and natural sound, I try to put life in perspective.

I've worked a few places, including Helical Post and KDVR Fox 31 News. I've had the best mentors; Bob Brandon gets the credit for teaching me to love this job. Through the years, I’ve learned how to make a computer sing with music. Even if it’s just bad karaoke or loud rock! I love to edit because I’m interested in hearing stories and I like to tell them too. I’ve won some NPPA awards and cherished them dearly. They are testament to the people of Colorado and their stories. I've been Emmy nominated and haven’t won. I’ve chaired the Cutting Edge Clip Contest. I enjoyed watching the hours of tape and the chair looks at it all. The position was inspiring.

My goal is to make good tv. The way a story is photographed and how it’s edited makes the difference. Regardless of any deadline, standards are important to set high. I do my best with the time I have. I rely on photographers and they rely on me. Pressure is pushing us all to turn more and do it faster. Relying on basics helps me keep it all in focus on the screen and behind the scenes. Without the tightest tight shots, well composed medium shots, and establishing wide shots, I’d be lost searching to put an edit together. Meaningful sound is my best friend, without it even the best photographs and stories wouldn’t be complete.

I'm learning something new everyday and growing as a journalist and person. I'll always be a student of television and life. I’ve learned to be technically proficient, be interested, and treat each story as if it were my own. The most important lesson, keep an eye on the details and remember what it feels like to be human.
