Scott Jensen
Scott Jensen is the Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year for 2003. Scott recently returned home to the West Coast and now works at Northwest Cable News in Portland, Oregon. He spent the last four and a half years at KARE in Minneapolis, learning from some of the best storytellers local news has to offer. Since leaving Minnesota, he feels a responsibility to share his experience and knowledge with the hope that others will improve the quality of television news at their stations.
Jensen credits his success in part to working well with reporters and finding the right balance between a story's visual structure and it's natural moments. He attempts to highlight human behavior in his work every day. "To me, television news photography is all about building relationships with people," Jensen said. "You may only get to spend twenty minutes with someone, but those twenty minutes may be the most important of his or her life. If a person can't trust you quickly, you may lose your chance to tell their story."
Jensen grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, and interned at KATU-TV in Portland, Oregon during the spring of 1996. He graduated from George Fox University, in Newberg, Oregon, in 1996 with a degree in communications/video production. From June 1996-1999, Scott worked as a photographer at KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska. In July of 1999, he moved to Minnesota to work for KARE-TV. In December of last year he went to work for NWCN.
Jensen has won more than 70 awards including four Edward R. Murrows and four Emmys. In 1998 and 1999, he was Region 11 Photographer of the Year Runner Up. He contributed to KARE winning Station of the Year in 2000. Scott was Region 5 Photographer of the Year for both 2001 and 2002, as well as a National POY Finalist in 2002. Jensen's greatest honor came last year when he was named the NPPA Best of Photojournalism Television Photographer of the Year.
Scott and his wife, Myrna, had their first child, Jilene, in September 2002. He enjoys sports, history and home improvement. Scott "has his life's priorities in order". He attends church regularly, and "knows all blessings come first from God and family".
