As a photojournalist you may work from your home (or car). But you still need space, and if you're using a bedroom for your office, it still has costs. Whether you deduct your office/studio on your taxes or not, the costs are still there and should be accounted for in this calculator. Costs include rent, mortgage payments, property taxes, fees to your homeowners association, homeowners or renters insurance, security fees (such as alarms), home maintenance, etc. Multiply the monthly costs by 12. Add in a year's worth of repairs and the other annual bills. Then figure the percentage of your home, based on the total square footage your business takes up. Multiply the total costs by the square footage percentage and you have the annual cost of your home office. If you rent or own space that's only for your business, forget the percentage stuff; just total up the cost of that space.
