Ross Taylor Named NSC Photographer Of The Year

 

PHILADELPHIA, PA (February 13, 2012) – Photojournalist Ross Taylor of The Virginian-Pilot was picked as the2012 NPPA Northern Short Course Photographer of the Yearduring judging this weekend at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.

Runner-up for the title was Aristide Economopoulos of The Newark Star-Ledger, and third place was Baltimore freelancer Patrick Smith. An honorable mention was awarded to Jahi Chikwendiu of The Washington Post.

Contest judging was done in advance of this year's Northern Short Course, which will be held March 8-10 at the Hyatt Fair Lakes in Fairfax, VA. There's still time to register to attend this year's NSC, and registration is available on the NSC Web site.

In other contest results, judges picked Smith for first place in the Sports Portfolio category, and the The Star-Ledger for the title of the 2012 NSC Newspaper Staff of the Year.

Taylor's story from the war in Afghanistan, "A Chance In Hell," won first place in the Team Multimedia category. Julia Xanthos won first place in the Daily Multimedia category, and Alejandra Villa won both first and second place in the Long-Form Multimedia (Individual) category.

Judges for the contest were Robb Carr, a staff photographer for Getty Images; Linda Epstein, a senior photo editor for the McClatchy-Tribune Information Services in Washington, DC; and George Miller, an assistant professor at Temple University
