First Round Of NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism Judging Starts This Week
DURHAM, NC (February 13, 2012) – The first round of category judging starts this week in NPPA's 2012 Best Of Photojournalism competition when a panel of experts will begin to view, using online technology, entries in this year's Best Of Television contest.
The final round of judging to select the Television winners will be done in person, on March 15-18, when the panel of experts gathers at the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Columbia, SC.
“NPPA is grateful to have the University of South Carolina hosting the final judging for the Television categories,” NPPA executive director Mindy Hutchison said today. "Our team is looking forward to four exciting days in Columbia of choosing winners and interacting with South Carolina students and their faculty at a first-class journalism school.”
The Best Of Television Photojournalism contest is coordinated by Merry Murray of KSNW-TV in Wichita, KS. The judges' names will be revealed next week, when the first round of evaluating the entries begins.
The Best Of Television Photojournalism contest this year received more than 730 entries, which is a 17 percent increase over last year's TV contest. Overall, NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism contest grew in entrants by more than 21 percent this year across all four contests (Television, Still Photography, Editing, and Web). This year almost 1,900 people submitted more than 15,750 entries, which represent some 37,800 images, pages, and clips.
NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism Contest Committee is headed by Terry Eiler, the director of Ohio University's School of Visual Communication (VisCom). Within the Committee there are four groups who are responsible for overseeing the four Best Of Photojournalism competitions.
The Best Of Print Photojournalism group includes Eiler along with Sherman Williams of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice; Sports Illustrated photography editor James Colton; and ZUMA Press founder Scott Mc Kiernan.
The Best Of Television Photojournalism contest is overseen by Murray. The Best Of Photojournalism Editing contest is coordinated by Ohio University VisCom faculty member Stan Alost, and the Best Of Web Photojournalism contest is managed by Regina McCombs of The Poynter Institute for Media Studies.
"We anticipate that all Best Of Photojournalism contest judging will be finished by the middle of April, 2012," Eiler said. While the final Telvision judging will be done in person at the University of South Carolina, BOP's other categories will have their finalists picked by judges who gather in person at OU's VisCom.
NPPA's 2012 Best Of Photojournalism competition is sponsored by Ohio University, PhotoShelter, Camera Bits, the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and Canon.
