Leadership Changes At Reuters Photo Operations
LONDON (November 9, 2011) – Reinhard Krause, the new leader of the photography operations at Reuters for the past year, last week announced some major changes in the picture department's global pictures operations and leadership roles.
The changes are "aimed at deepening our expertise and delivering an excellent and competitive file," Krause told editors and photographers at Reuters.
Gary Hershorn has accepted a new role as Global Editor, Sports Pictures, based in New York. "Gary will bring a wealth of sports expertise to bear on one of the most important parts of our operation, ensuring we produce a strong file tailor-made for clients," Krause said. Hershorn will work with the regional chief photographers and media sales to explore ways to streamline and sharpen the sports strategy. He will also lead planning for big events, as he is doing already for the London Olympics. Hershorn will continue to report to Krause.
Tom Szlukovenyi, who at one time was the global head of pictures for Reuters, will become Regional Pictures Editor, North America, based in Toronto. In this role, Szlukovenyi will oversee a restructuring in the U.S. and Canada photo operations that includes the establishment of a Toronto editing desk.
Reuters veteran Steve Crisp will relocate to Beirut from London in his current role as Regional Pictures Editor, Middle East and Africa. "The move will take Steve closer to the heart of one of our biggest ongoing stories - the upheaval in the Arab world - and will allow him to lead his extremely successful team from the front," Krause said.
Goran Tomasevic has accepted the position of Chief Photographer, East Africa, based in Nairobi. Tomasevic will move to Kenya from Egypt in the next few weeks, and will report to Crisp.
Russell Boyce has taken on the London-based role of Global Editor, News Projects - Pictures. "In this newly created position, Boyce will oversee efforts to produce new and innovative content, to integrate packaging initiatives and to raise the profile of Reuters Pictures. Russell and his team will work closely with the Reuters Online and Enterprise teams, the Wider Image initiative and Media sales to ensure we react fast and intelligently to ever-changing client needs," Krause said.
Boyce's successor as the Regional Pictures Editor, Asia, will be announced in the coming weeks, Krause said.
Before becoming the Global Pictures Editor for Reuters, Krause was a photographer in Jerusalem, Gaza, the West Bank, North Korea, Kosovo, Tibet, and Pakistan. He was the chief photographer for Reuters in China, based in Beijing. In his new role he leads some 400 Reuters staff and freelance photographers covering the news of the world. Born in Germany in 1959, he joined Reuters when he was 30.
