2011 2nd Quarter BUP Results
Second quarter entries were judged at The New York Times by photo editors Nakyung Han, Becky Lebowitz and Sara Barrett, Deputy Sports Editor Jason Stallman, and photographer/photo editor Josh Haner.
1st: Columbia Missourian, May 24
“Absolutely Shocked”
Brian Kratzer, Clint Alwahab, Jonathan Hinderliter and Justin Myers.
Judges’ comments: This was the clear winner. We loved everything about it: quality and variety of photo selection, clean page, well-designed. Not too overdone with bells and whistles.2nd: The St. Petersburg Times, April 17
“The Spill”
Bruce Moyer and Paul Alexander.
Judges’ comments: The full page photo is extremely effective. The size allows the photo to say it all.3rd: The Record, May 11
“Mississippi's Devastating Floods Move South”
Robert Townsend, Steve Auchard, Jon Naso and Klaus Peter Steitz with Associated Press and staff file photos.
Judges’ comments: We liked the dominant photo on this page. We liked the graphic quality of the photo, as well as the way it played off the second (unrelated) photo on the page. They worked together well.Honorable Mention : The Virginian-Pilot, May 24
“481”
Team.
Judges’ comments: We like this page quite a bit, but felt the large number on the top of the page was too overpowering. If the photo had been bigger and the typography smaller, we thought it would've been a stronger page.Honorable Mention: Los Angeles Times, May 22
“Deep in the drought of Texas”
Genaro Molina, Mary Vignoles and Kelli Sullivan.Judges’ comments: We liked the clean design of this page and the dominant photo.
1st: The Commercial Appeal, April 3
“Abandoned Memphis: James Lee House”
John Sale, Alan Spearman and Lindsey Turner.
Judges’ comments: This page was so elegant and quiet. Gorgeous photography.2nd: Columbia Missourian, April 5
“Stood Up at the Octagon”
Brian Kratzer, Allison Pasek, Eve Edelheit, Clint Alwahab, Polina Yamshchikov and Mallory Redinger.
Judges’ comments: We loved this spread - but felt like it was missing a really tight shot/detail.3rd: The Oregonian, June 4
“Art and Drama, onscreen and off”
Beth Nakamura. Randy Cox and Jim Sullivan-Springhetti.
Judges’ comments: The main photo stopped us in our tracks - elegant and simple, in the best sense of the word. A nice, clean page designed around a strong portrait.Honorable Mention: The Virginian-Pilot, June 5
“Sentimental Value”
Bill Kelley III, Ross Taylor and Luis Vilches.
Judges’ comments: This page was very similar to the 3rd place page (nice, clean page designed around a great portrait), but that main portrait wasn't quite as strong as in the other page.Honorable Mention: The Washington Post, June 12
“The Redemption”
Michel du Cille, Jahi Chikwendiu, Evan Kriss and Beth Broadwater.
Judges’ comments: Beautiful, dramatically lit portrait.
1st: The Palm Beach Post, May 24
“This is what war looks like”
Mark Edelson with photos by Chris Hondros of Getty Images.
Judges’ comments: This page is so intense, it doesn’t give you an out. You have to address what's going on in each and every photo.2nd: The Virginian-Pilot, May 1
“In Alabama, tornado turns housing to rubble”
Martin Smith-Rodden with photo by Dusty Compton of The Tuscaloosa News.
Judges’ comments: Great use of this photo - allowing it to be so big so readers can really dig in deep and see what is going on.3rd: Columbia Missourian, June 19
“150 years ago. A divided nation.”
Brian Kratzer, Clint Alwahab, Jonathan Hinderliter and Mallory Redinger.
Judges’ comments: This page had gorgeous, elegant design and lovely photos. But we thought the photos needed a slightly different edit - it would have been nice to see something that put the event in context. We also wanted to see a tighter detail. And we thought the portrait on the top right was far weaker than the other photos on the page - it was the weak link.Honorable Mention: The Virginian-Pilot, April 17
“In Ivory Coast, a hard-won power change”
Martin Smith-Rodden with photos by The Associated Press and AFP/Getty Images.
Judges’ comments: This page had gorgeous, elegant design and lovely photos. But we thought the photos needed a slightly different edit - it would have been nice to see something that put the event in context. We also wanted to see a tighter detail. And we thought the portrait on the top right was far weaker than the other photos on the page - it was the weak link.Honorable Mention: Los Angeles Times, June 26
“At the Fringe, the show goes on and on”
Kathy Pyon, Colin Crawford and Mariah Tauger.
Judges’ comments: We were all blown away by the dominant photo. But the rest of the page wasn’t as strong. The scale of all the photos is fairly similar - we wished there was a very wide shot or a very tight shot. And we thought, given the subject matter, that the photo style should be edgier, more fringe.
1st: The Virginian-Pilot, June 25
“Fighting the Good Fight”
Brad Vest and the photo and design teams.
Judges’ comments: We liked this page because of the complicated photo within a clean design. We all stopped for a moment to look more closely at the photo. We liked that the photo choice challenged the reader a bit.2nd: The Virginian-Pilot, May 18
“It's Over: Wendy Larry is Stepping Down...”
L. Todd Spencer and the photo and design teams.
Judges’ comments: The strong, clean photo combined with the headline said it all. We immediately knew what the story was.3rd: The Virginian-Pilot, April 7
“NBA Hopefuls Hope They Measure Up”
Amanda Lucier and the photo and design teams.
Judges’ comments: The main photo was different -- very wide and contrasty where others might use a standard basketball shot. We loved the photo and loved the decision to use something so different.Honorable Mention: The Washington Post, June 19
“Happy to be Left Alone”
Ray K. Saunders, Chris Rukan and Jonathan Newton.
Judges’ comments: This page is clean and elegant, as are the photos. But we felt the main photo and secondary photo were redundant. It would have been nice to see McIlroy in a different pose in that secondary shot. Or maybe just a tight shot of his face.
1st: Los Angeles Times, Oct 17, 2010 – June 19, 2011
“Crazy Beautiful”
Mark Boster, Kathy Pyon, Richard Derk, Calvin Holm and Helayne Perry.
Judges’ comments: These pages and photos are all simply gorgeous. A clear winner.2nd: The Washington Post, April 24
“Humble Prayers for Holy Week”
Sonya Doctorian, Matt McClain, Tan Ly and Jon Wile.
Judges’ comments: We thought this was beautiful and subtle. We loved that though at first glance it looked like work from abroad, it was actually shot in their own backyard. It's also so hard to make a page one start stand up to the quality of a jump page, but this page was able to do it.3rd: Los Angeles Times, April 3
“Broken Promise“
Michael Robinson Chavez and Mary Vignoles.
Judges’ comments: Simple, clean design. Beautiful photos.Honorable Mention: The Palm Beach Post, May 22
“We're Not Supposed to be Doing this Until We're 80”
Mark Edelson and Brandon Kruse
Judges’ comments: We liked the way the two jump pages looked so different from one another - not an easy thing to do. And we thought the photos hit all the right notes - the full range of emotions in dealing with this disease.Honorable Mention: The Commercial Appeal, April 3 – June 12
“Abandoned Memphis”
John Sale, Alan Spearman and Lindsey Turner.
Judges’ comments: Lovely, surprising pages. We loved and were delighted by the main photo on the first page (James Lee House cover). And we thought the first jump page (James Lee House jump page) was quiet and elegant.
