DURHAM, NC (August 5, 2011) – Judging is now complete in the National Press Photographers Association's Best Of Photojournalism contest's Multimedia categories and "Spilling Over" by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has won Best In Show honors, while judges picked The New York Times for the Best Use of the Web title.
In the Multimedia Package category, first place is "A Year At War" by The New York Times. Second place is "The Cost Of War: Coming Home A Different Person" by The Washington Post, and third place is "Caught In The Crossfire" by the Los Angeles Times.
In the News Audio Slideshow category, first place is "Singing The Suffering Of Haiti" by The New York Times. Second place is "The Natural Healers" by www.chicosanchez.com, and third place is "Working To Find Work" by the AARP Bulletin.
In the Feature Audio Slideshow category, first place is "His Act Is A Little Worn" by the Los Angeles Times. Second place is "Special Needs, Special Driver" by The (Lynchburg, VA) News & Advance, and third place is "W. Eugene Smith And The Jazz Loft Project" by The New York Times. Honorable mention was awarded to "A Mother's Love" by www.ehrinmacksey.com.
In the Sports Audio Slide Show category, first place is "Bull Sessions" by the Los Angeles Times. Second place is "Comeback Coach" by The (Lynchburg, VA) News & Advance, and third is "Mexican Escaramuzas" by the Associated Press. Honorable mention was awarded to "The Red Sea: Nebraska's Faithful Fans" by Bill Frakes and Straw Hat Visuals.
In the Documentary Video category, "Spilling Over" by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) won first place. Second was "Fathers For Life" by USA Today, and third was "Torn Apart" by the San Jose Mercury News. Honorable mentions were awarded to "A Year At War" by The New York Times, and "One Of The Boys" by UNC.
In the News/48 Hour Videos category, first place is "Stranded With Dad's Car" by The Washington Post. Second place is "Westboro Baptist Church Pickets Spokane" by The Spokesman, and third place is "First Steps For Young Haitian Amputee" by MSNBC.com.
In the Sports Videos category, first place is "On Thin Ice" by The New York Times. Second place is "RC Cars Make Boys Of Men" by The Detroit Free Press, and third place is "The Art Of The Foul Ball" by The Detroit Free Press. Honorable mentions were awarded to "The Beauty Of The Power Game" by The New York Times, and "Motorcycle Burn-Out Artist Blows Smoke" by The Detroit Free Press.
In the Feature Videos category, first place is "Goodnight Moon" by UNC. Second place is "The Last Lap At Laurel?" by The Washington Post, and third place is "Scene In 2011" by The Washington Post. Honorable mention was awarded to "Enlisting Korea's Youth To Fight An Elderly Disease" by The New York Times.
The final round was judged by Theresa Collington, and executive online producer for WTSP-TV in Tampa Bay; Seth Gitner, an assistant professor of newspaper and online journalism at Syracuse University; John Makely, a senior multimedia editor at MSNBC.com; and Merry Murray, a photojournalist at KSN-TV in Wichita. The judging was coordinated by Jack Rowland, who is the Best Of Photojournalism Multimedia chair and a senior video producer at the St. Petersburg Times.
The 2011 Best Of Photojournalism competition was sponsored this year by Canon as well as by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, ibiblio, Camera Bits, Ohio University's School of Visual Communication, and the St. Petersburg Times.
