Slaby Named To Chair Business Practices Committee

 

DURHAM, NC (September 1, 2011) – Matt Slaby, one of the founders of the LUCEO Images photography cooperative, has been named to chair the association’s Business Practices Committee. Slaby was appointed today by NPPA president Sean D. Elliot.


The Denver-based Slaby brings a diverse range of experience to the position. Before turning his attention to photography, he traveled the western United States as a wildland firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service Hotshots. He also worked during winters as an EMT with a metropolitan ambulance service. When he turned to photojournalism, Slaby interned at U.S. News & World Report and covered the 2006 congressional elections and the Washington, D.C. political circuit, including the White House and U.S. Capitol. He has a background in writing and literature and holds a JD from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.


“Matt’s background and his work as one of the founding members of LUCEO gives him a unique perspective on the business side of the visual journalism field,” said Elliot. “Matt will bring together an active group to shape the NPPA’s efforts educating and advocating better business practices for independent visual journalists.”


In a separate appointment, Mark E. Johnson as been named to chair NPPA’s Education Committee. Johnson is a lecturer at the University of Georgia’s Grady School of Journalism. He will coordinate the efforts of NPPA’s standing educational programs as well as work with the committee to plan new events and develop the NPPA’s strategies for improving and expanding educational offerings, Elliot said.
