DURHAM, NC (August 8, 2011) – Bettina Hansen, a staff photographer at The Hartford Courant, has been named to chair NPPA’s Student Committee, NPPA president Sean D. Elliot announced after making the appointment.
Hansen will work with a committee that includes Student Delegate Maddie McGarvey, Student Chapters Chair Michael P. King, Visual Student blogger Patrick Fallon, and Student Clips Contest Chair Brian McDermott to direct NPPA’s efforts reaching out to and serving student members.
Elliot said Hansen will also work to recruit student members and develop long-term plans for all NPPA efforts regarding students.
Hansen is a 2008 graduate of The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University and a native of Phoenix. She completed internships at The East Valley Tribune in Mesa, AZ, The Arizona Republic in Phoenix, The Advocate in Baton Rouge, LA, and joined the staff at The Hartford Courant after a summer internship in 2009.
“Bettina has a strong commitment to mentoring and outreach and that will serve her well in this role,” said Elliot. “I’ve known her for a couple of years now and I am constantly impressed by her enthusiasm for helping students and early career professionals navigate the many obstacles to a visual journalism career.”
