Maddie McGarvey Named NPPA Student Board Rep

DURHAM, NC (May 6, 2011) – Maddie McGarvey is the new Student Board Representative for the National Press Photographers Association.

McGarvey, a junior in Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication (VisCom), is the president of the NPPA Ohio University Chapter. She will intern at the San Francisco Chronicle this summer beginning in June. She recently received a gold award for portrait in the 65th College Photographer of the Year contest.

McGarvey will be a non-voting member of the NPPA board of directors. During her term she will be the voice for students for the organization.

"I would like to give students a reason to spend $65 on a membership," McGarvey said. "There should be better mentorship opportunities with the ability for student photographers to reach out to professionals. With that, we should start a section on the site where students can display their work and get feedback. I will help NPPA student chapters reach out to each other to swap ideas and interact."

She has worked as a freelance photojournalist for The Athens News and Southeast Ohio Magazine, and for Suburban News Publications in Columbus, OH. She's a contributing photographer for The Waiting List, a non-profit group that uses photography and multimedia to spread the word on the importance of organ donation. Her portfolio is online here.

If you have any questions or concerns for McGarvey, you can eMail her at maddiemcgarvey@gmail.com.

McGarvey replaces outgoing Student Board Representative Patrick Fallon.
