New York Memorial Set For Tim Hetherington
NEW YORK, NY (May 16, 2011) – Following Friday's Requiem mass in London for photojournalist and filmmaker Tim Hetherington that drew more than a thousand of his friends, family, and mourners, today the details were announced for a New York memorial service to be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
The gathering will be at 4 p.m. EDT at the First Presbyterian Church on Fifth Ave. between 11th and 12th streets in Manhattan, David Friend of Vanity Fair magazine told News Photographer magazine today.
Hetherington, 40, was killed last month alongside photojournalist Chris Hondros of Getty Images as they covered Libyan rebels defending the under-seige port city of Misrata. Hondros was remembered in an emotional funeral April 27 that drew a huge crowd to a Catholic Church in Brooklyn, and he was buried days later near his hometown of Fayetteville, NC.
The British filmmaker had been nominated for an Academy Award for his highly-praised documentary "Restrepo," a feature-length film made with Sebastian Junger that chronicled the deployment of an American platoon of soldiers fighting in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley.
Hetherington is survived by his parents, Alistair and Judith Hetherington; his siblings, Guy and Victoria; and his partner, Idil Ibrahim.
In his memory, Hetherington's survivors have asked that the photographer's favorite charity organizations be remembered: The Milton Margai School for the Blind; Human Rights Watch; and the Committee to Protect Journalists.
A fund has also been established to remember Hondros, to aid photojournalists who work in conflict zones.
