NPPA Launches Business Blitz Workshops
DURHAM, NC (May 6, 2011) – Business Blitz, an exciting new one-day educational workshop launched by the National Press Photographers Association, will kick off in June and make five stops across America before autumn, NPPA executive director Mindy Hutchison announced today.
Online registration for Business Blitz is now available.
This new NPPA program is designed to offer a variety of topics to help freelance photographers enhance their technical skills while buiilding a profitable, sustainable business.
Currently, five city stops are scheduled: June 10 in McLean, VA (a suburb of Washington, DC): August 11 in Denver, CO; September 29 in St. Louis, MO: October 7 in the San Francisco Bay Area; and November 10 in Tampa, FL.
Hutchison says that NPPA's Business Blitz is subsidized with funds the organization received from the Author's Coalition of America.
"The ACA funding has allowed us to offer an outstanding program with an extraordinarily low attendance fee for the workshop," Hutchison said.
"The cost will be only $10 for NPPA members, and $20 for non-members, and online registration for the June workshop in Washington, DC, will be available very soon."
The inaugural Business Blitz in June will be held at the USA Today office building. The day begins at 8 a.m. and goes until 7:30 p.m. EDT, with a morning and afternoon keynote speaker whose presentation will be in the line-up of break-out sessions.
The McLean, VA, stop will include these speakers and topics:
- John Harrington, author of the best-selling ‘Best Business Practices for Photographers’: Keynote on Invoicing, Estimates, Pricing, and Contract Negotiation.
- Allen Murabayashi, CEO and Co-Founder of PhotoShelter: Keynote on Put More Business in Your Photo Business; SEO and the Web.
- Chip Litherland, freelance editorial and wedding photographer: How I Learned From My Mistakes to Build a Successful Freelance Business.
- Craig Mitchelldyer, freelance editorial, corporate and wedding photographer: Lighting Session - Making Your Work Stand Out from the Crowd
- Garrett Hubbard, video journalist at USA Today: Shooting, Editing, and Maximizing Profitability for Video Storytelling
Hutchison said that additional speakers and more details for the following Business Blitz stops will be announced soon. Murabayashi will represent PhotoShelter at the McLean stop, and possibly St. Louis, while Grover Sanschagrin is scheduled to appear at the remaining events.
"Every day we hear announcements of downsizing in the newspaper industry," NPPA president Sean D. Elliot said. "The visual journalists affected by this paradigm shift in our profession need as much help as they can get to navigate this next phase of their career. With this team and this schedule, we're in a position to make a difference."
Freelance photographer Mitchelldyer is the Business Blitz workshop coordinator.
"Our hope with this series of workshops is to help photographers take their business to the next level," he said. "The marketplace is crowded with great shooters. I want you to learn the business and technical skills to help you rise to the top."
Murabayashi, who is the CEO and co-founder of PhotoShelter, said, "We're tremendously excited to support the NPPA in this traveling series. This is also a great opportunity for us to get involved by offering our own guidance and resources to help photographers across the country succeed in a changing industry."
In addition to giving one of the two keynote presentations, Murabayashi will also lead a Business Blitz break-out session on how photographers can take advantage of search engine optimization.
