Shawn Montano Named BOP TV Video Editor Of The Year

 

DURHAM, NC (May 9, 2011) – Judges this weekend finished picking winners in NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism contest for Television Editing categories, and Shawn Montano of KWGN-TV and KDVR-TV in Denver the Television Video Editor of the Year.

It's the fourth time Montano has won the title, having been picked by judges for the same honor in 2010, 2008, and 2001.

The panel also picked Joshua Maranhas of KDVR-TV as the runner-up for Television Video Editor of the Year.

NPPA's judges for the television editing categories this year were Debby Adams, an editor at KXAS-TV in Dallas for more than two decades, the last six years as chief editor; Carla English-Smith, an editor at KXAS-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth since 1991 who started her career in 1987 at WHO-TV in Des Moines; and Devynn Case, an editor at CBS11/TXA21 in Dallas-Fort Worth. The judging session was coordinated by Case and Ram Guzmán.

Winners were also named today in the specific Television Editing categories.

In News Feature, first place is Corky Scholl of KUSA-TV for "Circle of Death." Second place is Andy Buck of KUSA-TV for "One Million Faces," and third place is William Middeke of KARE-TV for "LeRoy & Loren." An honorable mention was awarded to Steve Rhodes of WTHR-TV for "Million Dollar View."

In Sports, first place is Corky Scholl of KUSA-TV for "Running Blind." Second place is Matt Mrozinski of WAVY-TV for "America at its Finest," and third place is Jonathan Malat of KARE-TV for "Reclaiming Their Heritage." Honorable mentions were awarded to Amanda Dennis of News 12 Connecticut for "Average Joe"; Craig Norkus of KARE-TV for "A Thrilling Ride"; and Steve Rhodes of WTHR-TV for "Extreme Edge of Nature."

In the Under Deadline/General News category, first place is Byron Reed of KUSA-TV for "Maybe She Will." Second place is Shawn Montano of KWGN-TV and KDVR-TV for "Gratitude is a Common Denominator," and third place is Joshua Maranhas of KDVR-TV for "Snooze Isn't Sleeping."

In the Magazine Editing category, first place is Ron Kabele of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for "The State of the Gulf." Second place is Jack Mayo Alger of CNN for "Rogue Justice," and third place is Jonathan Wong of The Bigger Picture, Global News, for "Love Through Loss." An honorable mention was awarded to Ryan Delamater of KDVR-TV and KWGN-TV for "Colorado Helping Haiti."

In the Editor's Effects category, first place is Steve Rhodes of WTHR-TV for "Jet Car Paul." Second place is also Rhodes for "Commute Curiosity", and third place is Douglas Burgess of KING-TV for "A More Complete Picture." Honorable mention was awarded to Noah Skinner of KDVR-TV for "Holy Ghost."

In the General News/Simple Effects (Editors) category, first place is Jeramy Rosenberg of WJW-TV for "The Muni Lot." Second place is Shawn Montano of KWGN-TV and KDVR-TV for "After Sex Offenders," and third place is Joshua Maranhas of KDVR-TV for "No Hangover, Guaranteed."

In the General News/Simple Effects (Photographers) category, first place is Matt Mrozinski of WAVY-TV for "I Think It's A Whale ... Really!?" Second place is Mrozinski for "Close Call," and third place is Andy Shilts of KMSP-TV for "Passion and Determination." An honorable mention was awarded to Kurt Austin of KGW-TV for "Oh My God, It's Pie."

In the News Feature (Editors) category, first place is Mitch Pittman of WFFF-TV for "Superbagger." Second place is Jonathan Malat of KARE-TV for "Jazzman," and third place is Malat for "Mow Club." An honorable mention was awarded to Amanda Dennis of News 12 Connecticut for "Sweet Subject."

In the Photo Essay (Photographers) category, first place is Michael DelGuidice of WNBC-TV for "It's Liquid Gold." Second place is Delgiudice for "Blowing In the Wind" and third place is Craig Norkus of KARE-TV for "Feelin' Green." Honorable mentions were awarded to Anne Herbst of KUSA-TV for "Changing the Tune of Downtown," and to Andy Shiltz of KMSP-TV for "Forgetaboutit."

In the Photo Essay (Editors) category, the judges said they were "extremely underwhelmed with the quality of work" entered and no places were awarded first, second, or third. An honorable mention was given to Joshua Maranhas of KDVR-TV for "Prêt-á-Portêr means Ready to Wear".
