J. Bruce Baumann Inducted Into Indiana Journalism Hall Of Fame

BLOOMINGTON, IN (May 4, 2011) - The tumultuous and storied career of photojournalist and NPPA board member J. Bruce Baumann, who has traveled the world for National Geographic and edited photographs and newspapers in Grand Rapids, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Monterey, and Evansville came full circle April 30 with his induction into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame.

Bauman began his career at the Evansville Sunday Courier & Press as a photographer and sports reporter in the 1960s and retired as editor of the Evansville Courier in 2007. After teaching photojournalism at Southern Illinois University, he now lives in southwestern Indian and publishes the online journal Posey Magazine.

He was one of five Indiana editors recognized at Indiana University, where the Hall of Fame is housed, for his contribution to journalism and local communities. Also recognized were Bill Nangle, managing editor of the South Bend Tribune; the late Jack E. Backer, publisher and faculty adviser to the Indiana Daily Student; Clay Trusty Jr., the late associate editor of the Indianapolis Star, and the late Charles Werner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and state editor of the Indianapolis Star.

“Journalism works best when words and pictures work together,” Baumann told more than 100 editors, Indiana University faculty members and guests. “That’s the lesson of my career.”

Baumann also paid tribute to Robert E. Gilka, the legendary National Geographic Magazine director of photography, for “helping me to grow up,” and to former National Geographic editor Wilbur E. (Bill) Garrett for “helping me understand that the most important people are the ones who work under you, not above you.”
