Lisa Krantz Appointed Chair Of NPPA's Diversity Committee

DURHAM, NC (April 18, 2011) – Lisa Krantz, a staff photojournalist for the San Antonio Express-News, has been appointed to chair NPPA's Diversity Committee by NPPA president Sean D. Elliot.

"Krantz brings a longtime passion for the issue to the position," Elliot said, "and she will assemble a committee charged with keeping issues of diversity throughout the NPPA in the forefront of all considerations."

Krantz was a local co-chair for NPPA's Women in Photojournalism conference when it was hosted in Austin, TX.

"Far too often have I heard people complain that NPPA only shows a façade of 'old white men,'" Elliot said. "But our membership, and our potential membership, consists of a vastly-wider pool of individuals. It is my hope that Lisa and her committee will help us remain aware of the diversity around us and help us to serve, in whatever way possible, the wider community of visual journalism."

Elliot noted that NPPA's Women In Photojournalism conference, which was cancelled based on economic considerations, had played a role in addressing diversity concerns and in the absence of that event NPPA may have been lacking in a cohesive effort to continue to focus on diversity.

"I've also asked Lisa to consider the widest possible definition of diversity in her role as this committee chair and to look for any divisions in our field that can be identified as potential areas of concern," Elliot said.

Since 2004, Krantz has been a staff photojournalist at the Express-News after working at the Naples (FL) Daily News for five years. She's a graduate of Florida State University with a BA in psychology and has a masters degree in photography from Syracuse University. She's been NPPA's Region 8 Photographer of the Year in 2005 and 2009 and she was runner-up for the title in 2004, 2006, and 2008. She's been an NPPA member since 1996.
