Funeral Services Announced For Chris Hondros

DURHAM, NC (April 25, 2011) – Funeral services have been announced for Getty Images senior staff photographer Chris Hondros, killed last week along with photojournalist Tim Hetherington when they were struck by mortar fire in Misrata, Libya, while covering rebels battling Libyan troops.

"He was a special guy, for sure, and we will miss him so much," Dean Hondros, brother to the slain photojournalist, told News Photographer magazine Sunday night when he sent out notice of the funeral plans.

Four days after they were killed in Misrata, and two other photojournalists severely injured along with them, Libyan loyalist forces continued to pound Misrata with artillery attacks on Sunday despite government claims in Tripoli that they were holding their fire.

In the past two days, 32 people have been killed in Misrata and dozens more were injured, the Associated Press reports.

The first service for Hondros will be held Wednesday, April 27, 2011, in Brooklyn, NY, at the Sacred Hearts St. Stephens Church, 125 Summit Street, at 1 p.m. eastern time.

Wednesday's service will be broadcast live on USTREAM here.

Then on Friday in Fayetteville, NC, a wake will be held beginning at 6 p.m. eastern time at the Rogers & Breece Funeral Home, 500 Ramsey Street.

Funeral services will be the next day, Saturday April 30, 2011, at 11 a.m. eastern time at the Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 614 Oakridge Ave., Fayetteville.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that friends please make a donation to The Chris Hondros Fund, which will provide scholarships for aspiring photojournalists and raise awareness of issues surrounding conflict photography. Donations can be sent to The Chris Hondros Fund, c/o Getty Images, 75 Varick St, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10013.

Hondros, 41, was a 1993 North Carolina State graduate and a Fayetteville native who graduated from Terry Sanford High School in 1988, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2004, won the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal in 2005, and got his masters degree from Ohio University's School of Visual Communication in 2006. His career began at the Fayetteville Observer in 1996.

Hondros covered wars all over the world but he maintained a home in New York City and ties to his Fayetteville beginnings. In addition to his younger brother Dean he is survived by his mother, Inge Hondros of Fayetteville, and his fiancée, Christina Piaia of New York.

Funeral services have now been set for Hetherington. A service will be held in London on Friday May 13, 2011, at 11 a.m. at The Jesuit Church Of The Immaculate Conception on Farm Street at Mayfair in London, W1. The family asks those attending to please note the formal entrance to the church is situated at 114 Mount Street, Mayfair, London, W1K 3AH.

A reception will follow at The Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London.

The family says that all of the photographer's friends are invited to attend the service and reception, and that if you are planning to attend please eMail his photographic representative, Johanna Ramos-Boyer, at johanna@jrbcomm.com.
