KING-TV Wins BOP's Large Market Station Of The Year Title
NORMAN, OK (March 16, 2011) – KING-TV of Seattle has been picked as the Large Market Station of the Year for their winning entry in the National Press Photographers Association's 2011 Best Of Photojournalism Television contest.
WBFF-TV in Baltimore was the runner-up.
Judges today at NPPA's NewsVideo Workshop at the University of Oklahoma in Norman picked KING-TV over the six finalists. The other finalists for Large Market SOY were WBFF-TV; KARE-TV of Minneapolis; KUSA-TV of Denver; WFAA-TV of Dallas; and WTVG-TV of Nashville, TN.
"This process was one of the most difficult ... yeah, I've said that before, but it's true," contest judge Darren Brown said.
"We struggled mightily, each fighting for our favorite in this category. Rest assured that strong arguments were made for at least four different television stations. The winner truly deserved it."
Judge Rob Rhodes said, "While all of our finalists had outstanding Features and In Depth pieces KING-TV had the best Spot news entries. That being said, we fell in love with several stories like 'A Story to Remember' and 'A Smell of Seattle Tradition." We want to award this station for having such a strong committment to taking the time to do all of these stories right. In this day and age of instant gratification it is nice to see a group care so much about detail."
Earlier today judges picked WAVY-TV of Portsmouth, VA, as the Medium Market Station of the Year, and KCCI-TV of Des Moines, IA, as the Small Market Station of the Year.
The runner-up for Medium Market SOY is WITI-TV in Milwaukee, WI, and the runner-up for Small Market SOY is KBAK-KBFX in Bakersfield, CA.
This week's Television Photography judges were Darren Brown of KWTV-TV in Oklahoma City; Rob Rhodes of KCTV-TV in Kansas City, MO; and Steve Rhodes of WTHR-TV in Indianapolis. The contest judging has been coordinated by Merry Murray.
The 2011 Best Of Photojournalism competition is sponsored this year by Canon as well as by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, ibiblio, Camera Bits, Ohio University's School of Visual Communication, and the St. Petersburg Times.
