Best Of Photojournalism: Judges Pick Television Photography Winners
NORMAN, OK (March 16, 2011) – Judges for the Television Photography categories of NPPA's 2011 Best Of Photojournalism competition today started viewing stories and picking winners.
This year judging of the Television Photogrpahy categories are taking place in conjunction with NPPA's NewsVideo Workshop at the University of Oklahoma. Television Editing categories will be judged in April.
This week's Television Photography judges are Darren Brown of KWTV-TV in Oklahoma City; Rob Rhodes of KCTV-TV in Kansas City, MO; and Steve Rhodes of WTHR-TV in Indianapolis. The contest judging has been coordinated by Merry Murray
Today judges picked winners in the Spot News, Deadline, General news, and 48-Hour Feature categories.
In Spot News, Darren Durlach's story "My Pride And Joy" won first place. Durlach was at WBFF-TV in Baltimore when he shot the winning piece. Since then he's joined the staff of The Boston Globe. Second place is Matt Mrozinski of WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, VA, and third place is Andy Sugden of WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids, MI. Honorable mention was awarded to Scott Jensen of KING-TV in Seattle, WA.
In the Deadline News category, "Operation Outreach" by KARE-TV's Bill Middeke's won first place. Second place is Chris Turner of CNN, and third place is Matt Mrozinski of WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, VA. Honorable mention was awarded to Anne Herbst of KUSA-TV in Denver.
In the General News category, "Absolutely Devastating" by Michael DelGiudice of WNBC-TV in New York won first place. Second place is Darren Durlach of WBFF-TV in Baltimore, and third place is Scott Jensen of KING-TV in Seattle. Honorable mentions were awarded to Bill Middeke of KARE-TV and Craig Norkus of KARE-TV.
In the 48-Hour Feature category, "The Gift Of Healing" by WNBC-TV's Michael DelGiudice won first place. Second place is Kevin Sullivan of WALA-TV in Mobile, AL, and third place is Anne Herbst of KUSA-TV in Denver. Honorable mention was awarded to Michael DelGiudice of WNBC-TV.
In the News Feature category, "Running Blind" by KUSA-TV's Corky Scholl won first place. Second place is Jonathan Malat of KARE-TV in Minneapolis, and third place is Michael DelGiudice of WNBC-TV. Honorable mentions were awarded to Darren Durlach of WBFF-TV in Baltimore and Jeremy Moorhead of CNN.
Judging in the remaining categories will continue Thursday and Friday.
