Call For Possible Purchase: Young Portfolio Project In Japan

DURHAM, NC (February 7, 2011) – The Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (KMoPA) in Japan has issued an invitation to all young photographers to send them their "finest images" – not for a contest, but for possible purchase and inclusion in the museum's permanent collection.

"This invitation is not a call to a contest where pieces are judged, then ranked. Rather, it is the Museum's wish to collect works by young and emerging photographers for its permanent collection," curator Yuko Yamaji said in the museum's announcement. "We believe that there is no clearer signal or a more direct means of support for the young photographer than the purchase of their work for a permanent museum collection. This is why the Museum acquires work by those who promise to be our future photographic visionaries."

Called the "Young Portfolio Project," the effort is now in its 16th year and more than 6,000 photographs have been submitted by 255 photogrpahers from 26 countries, Yamaji said. After review by a committee, 205 works by 33 photographers have been bought for the museum's permanent collection, they report.

Participation is not limited, and the individual is free to submit works as many times as they like up until the age of 35, Yamaji said, "allowing us to watch as they spin their curiosity into a thread and weave it into something visible through their photographs."

Submission guidelines are on their Web site here, and the online application period runs from April 1 to April 30, 2011. This year's selection committee includes Hiro Kikai, Kyoichi Tsuzuki, and Eikoh Hosoe (the museum's director). The museum's curator asked NPPA to make its eligible members aware of this opportunity and encouraged those who are interested to participate.
