NPPF Scholarship Application Deadline Is March 7

DURHAM, NC (February 14, 2011) – The National Press Photographers Foundation has opened its scholarship process using a new Web site and online application procedure for 2011, and seven $2,000 scholarships will be awarded, NPPF treasurer Frank Folwell announced.

The online application procedure uses the same Web-based technology as NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism competition, and while BOP entries are compatible with the NPPF Scholarship Site the two must be entered separately, Folwell said.

"This should make applying for NPPF scholarships much easier," Folwell said.

The deadline for applying for NPPF scholarships is March 7, 2011.

NPPF scholarships are awarded to encourage those with talent and dedication to photojournalism who need financial help to continue their studies. The awards are directed to students who are studying fulltime or who are returning to college.

The applications will be judged by a panel of professional photojournalists. Last year there were 69 portfolios submitted by students from 42 universities and colleges.

Last year's judges were in agreement that besides a strong portfolio of still photography, applicants for this year's scholarships will not be as competitive unless they have evidence of multimedia in their portfolio, such as a video story or still photographs in a slideshow with a soundtrack.

The Bob East, Reid Blackburn, Bob Baxter, Kit C. King and Jimi Lott scholarships are endowed by donations from friends, family and news organizations.

The G. Gordon Yoder TV News Workshop Grant was funded by a gift from television news pioneer and former NPPF board member G. Gordon Yoder.

NPPF provides funding for the NPPF Still and Multimedia Scholarship, the NPPF TV News Scholarship and the College Photographer of the Year International awards through donations from NPPA members.

The NPPF Booster Club, made up of Life NPPA members, has provided significant funding over the years.

Dr. James W. Brown is the NPPF Scholarships chairperson, and he can be contacted for more information at jwbrown@nppf.org.
