BOP Judges Pick Winners In TV Photography, Editing Categories

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (March 4, 2010) – Judges at NPPA's 2010 Best Of Photojournalism Television competition at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies today announced winners in the 48 Hour Web, Sports Feature Web Photography, Photography In Depth, Editing/Sports 24 Hours, Editing/General News Simple Effects, Editing/Under Deadline Spot News, Editing/Photo Essay, and many other categories.

NPPA's Photojournalism Award For Reporting has been awarded to Boyd Huppert of KARE-TV in Minneapolis. Runner-up was Joe Fryer of KARE-TV.

"Boyd Huppert had three stories that created a higher level of 'magic than any other entry," judge Jake Carpenter said. "The best way I can describe this 'magic' is a connection between the reporter and the content of the story that fuses the two together. Instead of having a story of interview sots and reporter track, the stories in this entry had a flow of storytelling that somewhat merged them together. More than just 'writing to video' or 'track byte track,' the reporter's words and feelings wrapped themselves around the raw content itself."

In 48 Hour Web, first place is Jason Witmer of the Houston Chronicle for "Too Manly for the Quilt Show." Second place is Todd Rogenthien of KHOU-TV in Houston for "There's Nothing Left ... There's Nothing Left," and third place is Brian Kaufman of the Detroit Free Press or "Mystery Cars."
