KARE-TV Wins BOP's Large Market Station Of The Year Title

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (March 4, 2010) – KARE-TV of Minneapolis has been picked as the Large Market Station of the Year for their winning entry in the National Press Photographers Association's 2010 Best Of Photojournalism Television contest by judges at the competition's host site, The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg.

Runner-up for the Large Market SOY title was WBFF-TV of Baltimore.

"The winner had stories that were put together well and were creative and showed a well-rounded group of photojournalists," judge Jake Carpenter said. "I wasn't in love with either of the spot news stories, but both were indeed well done. I absolutely loved 'Crash for Clunkers' - the great angles and use of multiple cameras really stood out to me. It was a hilarious story with great characters and was really well told ... The runner-up was a close second ... They had a lot of great stories that were well told and very creative."

KARE-TV's SOY entry "showed consistent visual and storytelling skills throughout their entry from a significant portion of their staff, truly making them a team worth noting," judge Crystal Lauderdale said.

"This group of photographers really proved their ability to capture memorable moments and complete characters. Well after the final clip ended, I can vividly recall images and soundbites from each piece - Perry the turkey pecking at his brother the dog, the gravelly laugh of a tough old trucker who wrecked his truck in a lake and survived, the perspective of a school bus as it dove off of a dirt pile and the sound of the crowd that cheered it on, twin brothers wearing two different "uniforms" (and the shoes that matched) to a football game, or the throbbing speaker of a Fiero as it was rebuilt and reborn. These details are what set really good stories apart for me, and it takes a good eye - or in this case, a team of good eyes - to recognize them out in the field."

The finalists for Large Market SOY were KARE-TV, WBFF-TV, and WTVF-TV of Nashville.

Along with their stories, KARE-TV included their "Philosophy on television news photography" with their entry:

"The lives of everyday people are presented each day on KARE-TV. We are a large market station with 26 photojournalists and 4 editors who aspire to shoot and edit their stories to the best of their abilities, as a service to our viewers. This also means we don’t over hype stories or try to sensationalize the news of the day, but try to find a balance of what’s considered hard and soft news. We travel near and far to find those stories, from the local metropolitan Twin Cities area, to rural Minnesota and the surrounding states. It’s the hope of the staff to show our audience relevant stories with memorable content and characters, if only to offer a better understanding of the world around them."

Earlier this week judges picked WAVY-TV of Portsmouth, VA, as the Medium Market Station of the Year, and KTUU-TV of Anchorage, AK, as the Small Market Station of the Year.

At 3 p.m. EST on Friday, March 5, Best Of Photojournalism judges will join Poynter's Al Tompkins in a live online chat to discuss the contest and the top winners. You can listen to the panel talk about trends they've seen in the work and what they learned from the entries by joining this Poynter page at 3 p.m. EST.
