Brad Ingram Wins BOP TV Deadline News Category, KARE-TV Wins Team Entry

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (March 2, 2010) – Brad Ingram of WGHP-TV in High Point, NC, today won first place in the Deadline News category of the National Press Photographers Association's 2010 Best Of Photojournalism Television competition for "Happy Hill Apartment Fire."

And in the second category of winners announced today, Jonathan Malat, Craig Norkus, Matt Passolt, Gary Knox, and William Middeke of KARE-TV in Minneapolis won first place in the Team Entry category for "Home Field Advantage."

Judges working at the contest's host site, The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, are picking winners in the Sports Feature and Medium Market Station of the Year catetories later today.

In the Deadline News category won by Ingram, second place was awarded to Matt Mrozinski of WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, VA, for "Virginia's Niagara Falls," and third place was Jason Hanson of KSTP-TV in Minneapolis for "Feet From Home." And honorable mention was awarded to Andy Shilts of KMSP-TV in Minneapolis for "No Justice, No Peace."

"'Happy Hill Apartment Fire' is an excellent example of a photojournalist who worked hard and appeared to be everywhere in this story," judge Dave Delozier said. "The story started out with some extremely well composed images of the fire that included detail shots and wide shots to give the viewers a perspective on the scope of the fire. One of the best parts of this story is that the photojournalist didn't get mesmerized by the flames and captured a group of neighbors praying for the occupants of the apartment building and the firefighters. The photojournalist also captured good images of the residents being evacuated from the apartment building. The story was not predictable and was well shot. Given the short turn, it was outstanding."

Second place in the Team Entry category went to WTVF-TV's Nathan Thompson, Mike Rose, Danny Rogers, and Mark Martin from Nashville, TN, for "The New Kid on the Block." Third place is KARE-TV's Paul Rovelstad, Malat, and Middeke for "Andrew's Run." Honorable mention was awarded to WAVY-TV's Colin McIntyre, Andy Miller, Brian Parsons, Chris Recklin, and Mrozinski for "A Moment I'll Never Forget."

"'Home Field Advantage' was a unanimous first place," judge Jake Carpenter said. "A practically flawless piece that is an amazing example of what a team of photojournalists can produce together. Coordination before, during, and after the event was extrememely evident in the final product. Awesome stories, pictures, and sound."

"Our first place pick for the team category was seamless," judge Crystal Lauderdale said. "On big game days it's not uncommon to send multiple journalists out to capture all possible angles, but there's a difference between a multi-shooter assignment and a real team effort. It was an awesome example of a group working and communicating together to compile a truly cohesive story. This piece seemed to have a direction from the beginning and followed some characters throughout. It was easy and fun to watch."

During Sunday's judging, the panel picked Darren Durlach for first place in Spot News, and Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill of HBO for first place in the Documentary category for "China's Unnatural Disaster."

During Monday's judging, Durlach also won first place in General News and KTUU-TV of Anchorage, Alaska, was picked as the Small Market Station of the Year.

NPPA's 2010 Best of Photojournalism competition is sponsored this year by The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, ibiblio, Camera Bits, Ohio University, and the St. Petersburg Times.
