Virginian-Pilot Wins Best Use Of Photography Quarterly Clip Contest

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (February 26, 2010) – The Virginian-Pilot has won this year's Best Use of Photography Quarterly Clip Contest, chairperson Mark Edelson announced today.
The Los Angeles Times placed second and the The Palm Beach Post was third. Other papers that earned recognition during the year included The Commercial Appeal, The Denver Post, The (Jasper, IN) Herald, The Herald News, The Midland Daily News, The Naples Daily News, The Oregonian, The Record, The St. Petersburg Times and The State.
Over the course of the year five categories of usage were judged quarterly, with points assigned for each winning page. Entries were judged by a wide range of professionals at universities, magazines, picture agencies and newspapers.
"BUP is a contest, and because of that winners are chosen," said Edelson. "But more important is the continually growing online archive of good and sometimes extraordinary examples of how to effectively use photographs to tell stories. The easily accessible archive of winning pages, which display a wide variety of approaches, hopefully helps students and professional alike improve their work and understand that there's certainly more than one formula for successfully telling stories in print."
An added perk for those who follow the quarterly posting of BUP winners is that they will have already seen many of the pages that eventually are determined to be the year's best at NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism contest and at the University of Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International contest, Edelson said.
The 2009 4th Quarter winners are now online in a gallery here, and the final quarter's complete results are listed here.
