Tom Kennedy, Ron Londen Appointed To NPPA Board Of Directors
DURHAM, NC (January 7, 2010) – Bob Carey, president of the National Press Photographers Association, today appointed two new members to NPPA's national Board of Directors, and along with the six members elected just a few weeks ago they will participate in the first meeting of the new board on January 16 in Durham.
Appointed today were board members Tom Kennedy and Ron Londen.
Kennedy is an internationally-known visual journalist with extensive experience in print and online journalism, and until recently he was the managing editor for multimedia at The Washington Post and Newsweek Interactive. Before that he was director of photography at the National Geographic Society for ten years, and earlier in his career he was deputy graphics editor for the Philadelphia Inquirer. His career in photojournalism started in Florida at The Gainsville Sun and at The Orlando Sentinel Star.
Today Kennedy is a multimedia consultant based in Chevy Chase, MD, and recently he was named by the University of Miami School of Communication’s Knight Center for International Media as its next Resident Professional. Kennedy will work closely with Knight Chair for Visual Journalism Rich Beckman and visual journalism graduate students over the 2010 spring semester to create an innovative Web site that will evaluate the state of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in seven Asian and African cities.
Londen is chief creative strategist for Journey Group, but he started his career with 15 years in the newspaper business. Working first as a photojournalist in Southern California, Londen was a photography director and graphics editor at several newspapers including four years directing the staff at the Orange County Register, a newspaper widely celebrated for its use of photography. Two times his newspapers were selected for "Best Use Of Photography" in the NPPA and University of Missouri's Pictures of the Year competition. Since 1995, he's help build a custom publishing and corporate design firm based in Charlottesville, VA, creating projects that include photography, video, and design.
"When I began looking for people to serve on the board, I was looking for people who understood where we've come from, yet have an ability to see the need for change and can adapt to the future," NPPA president Carey said today.
"Both Tom and Ron are people who can think outside the box and in our profession, that is exactly what we need to be doing. Tom is a visionary. He has been ahead of the curve and will bring a long history of understanding the need for change to the board. He has strong ties to the traditional photojournalism, yet has help craft a new model of visual journalism. Ron left active photojournalism several years ago to help run a successful company dealing with all aspects of communication. He has kept his hand in visual journalism and I believe he will add to our need for a strong business sense on the board."
One position remains open on the board after today's appointments, and Carey is in the process of making that pick as well.
Under NPPA's new governance structure, six new board members were elected by NPPA members in December and three board members were to be appointed to the panel by NPPA's president before the first board meeting in January.
In the December election, Smiley Pool and Greg Smith were elected to serve three-year terms; Mike Borland and Jim Michalowski were elected to serve two-year terms; and Merry Murray and Mike King were elected to serve one-year terms.
Going forward, all elected board seats will be three-year terms with two seats being open for election each year.
