Palm Beach Post Wins NPPA's Quarterly Best Use Of Photography Contest

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (March 11, 2008) – The Palm Beach Post has won this year's Best Use of Photography Quarterly Clip Contest, chairperson Mark Edelson announced today.

The Virginian-Pilot placed second and the Los Angeles Times was third, followed by The Oregonian, The Commercial Appeal, The Rocky Mountain News, and the St. Petersburg Times.

"BUP's continually growing online archive of good and sometimes extraordinary examples of how to effectively use photographs to tell stories in print, with its display of a wide variety of approaches, is intended to help students and professionals alike improve their work," Edelson said.

"Given the state of the industry, it also serves to reinforce the idea that effective storytelling in print is still possible and indeed exists at a variety of publications."

An added perk for those who follow the quarterly posting of BUP winners is that they will have already seen many of the pages that eventually are determined to be the year's best at NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism contest and at the University of Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International contest, Edelson said.

Over the course of the year, five categories of usage were judged quarterly, with points assigned for each winning entry. The judges at universities, magazines, picture agencies, and newspapers were tasked with evaluating picture selection, page design, and the packaging of words and images to achieve effective storytelling.

Edelson said that 2008's 4th quarter results and pages will be posted online in the near future.
