Layoffs In Philadelphia Will Hit Hard In Photo
PHILADELPHIA, PA (December 9, 2008) – The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia has warned staffers at the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News that Philadelphia Media Holdings plans layoffs, primarily from the newsrooms, specifically from the photography and art departments and the copy desks, and as many as 35 employees will be eliminated.
Philadelphia Media Holdings will send letters to the more than 300 employees across the company on Wednesday, the Guild said, asking for volunteers. If there are not enough volunteers by December 31, the company will resort to layoffs.
The Guild released a list of positions that are planned to be cut and it includes 7 photographers, 2 lab techs, and 3 photo editors at the Inquirer, and one photographer at the Daily News.
Volunteers for layoff will get full severance pay, unemployment pay, unused vacation and personal days pay, and up to 18 months of COBRA health insurance, the Guild said.
