Seattle Times Cutting 150 More Jobs

SEATTLE, WA (November 3, 2008) – Today the publisher of The Seattle Times announced a 10 percent cut in the paper's work force, as many as 150 jobs, citing industry changes, falling circulation, and the worldwide financial crisis.
The cuts come seven months after a similar round of cutbacks.
Some 35 to 45 positions will be cut from the newsroom, a company spokesperson said. At the beginning of October the Times had 1,599 employees, and about 260 of those were newsroom positions.
Publisher Frank Blethen said the job cuts are the result of the company needing to adjust to changes that have reduced advertising revenue in all media, and a stall in online advertising revenue brought on by a worldwide economic slowdown.
Blethen also warned that 2009 could include more layoffs if the economy doesn't improve.
Under a joint operating agreement The Seattle Times handles the business operations of the Seattle Post-Intellegencer, but both newspapers maintain separate newsrooms.
