Kansas City Star Plans 50 Layoffs

KANSAS CITY, MO (November 12, 2008) – The Kansas City Star will lay off 50 employees across all of its departments, the Star's marketing director announced Monday, but Tracy Hazen said she doesn't know how many will be from the newsroom.

The Star is owned by Sacramento-based McClatchy Co. and the newspaper laid off about 30 employees in September. The layoffs took place at about the same time an equal number of employees took voluntary buy-outs.

Last summer McClatchy announced that it would cut about 1,400 full-time jobs nationwide, about 10 percent of its employees.
