Layoffs At The Day In New London, CT

NEW LONDON, CT (November 7, 2008) – The Day Publishing Co. has cut 11 positions from its newsroom and production departments, about 3 percent of its overall workforce, during a restructuring that publisher Gary Farrugia announced today.

The jobs included both full-time and part-time positions, and the publisher said the reorganization includes not filling positions that have been open in several departments. The company currently employes approximately 330 people.

"We want to make sure this company remains as strong and intact as we can," Farrugia told employees. "This is certainly sobering, but not cataclysmic."

The publisher said The Day's newsroom would take over producing the company's weekly newspaper in addition to its own, and the reorganization puts one newsroom in charge of all the papers plus the online operation.
