More Than 200 Sign Up For Star-Ledger Buy-Outs
NEWARK, NJ (October 1, 2008) – More than 200 non-union employees of The Star-Ledger have signed up for buy-outs, the newspaper said today, meeting the second of three goals set by owners to avoid shutting down or selling the paper.
An agreement with union mailers was reached in September, and talks appear to be close to reaching an agreement with union drivers. All three conditions needed to be met by October 8 or owners said they were going to sell or close New Jersey's largest newspaper.
"I urge the drivers to vote 'yes' to protect their own jobs and and those of everyone else who works at The Star-Leger," publisher George Arwady is quoted saying in the newspaper. He stressed that the deadline is "final."
The Star-Ledger is owned by Advance Publications.
