NYC Ceremony Upcoming For W. Eugene Smith, Howard Chapnick Grants

NEW YORK, NY (October 15, 2008) – The board of directors of the W. Eugene Smith Foundation are inviting interested photographers and editors to attend a ceremony on Wednesday, October 22, in New York where the 2008 recipients of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund's Grant in Humanistic Photography, and the Howard Chapnick Grant, will be named.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis at the Tishman Auditorium of the New School, 66 West 12th Street (between 5th and 6th Ave.) for the 6:30 p.m. program. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., and there will be refreshments served after the program.

The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's compassionate dedication exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist. The grant for 2008 will be $30,000, with an additional $5,000 in fellowship money to be awarded at the discretion of the jury. The grant program is independently administered by the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund.

Recent winners include Stephen Dupont (2007), Paolo Pellegrin (2006), and Pep Bonet (2005).

The Howard Chapnick Grant for the Advancement of Photojournalism, which is administered by the Smith Memorial Fund, will also be presented. The annual $5,000 grant is to encourage and support leadership in fields ancillary to photojournalism, such as editing, research, and management, with special consideration given to projects that promote social change or that serve significant concerns of photojournalism.

Last year's winner of the Chapnick Grant was the "Bridge Project," an effort to bring photographic education to impoverished neighborhoods in New York City. The $5,000 award was presented to Miguel Anaya, Lyric Cabral, Mark Nevers, Danny Peralta, and Bashira Webb.
