Philadelphia Inquirer Asks J-Schools To Pay For Interns

PHILADELPHIA, PA (October 13, 2008) – The Philadelphia Inquirer told a journalism school dean in North Carolina that the newspaper can no longer afford to pay for college interns, and that union rules prohibit interns who work for free, so the newspaper is now asking colleges and universities to pay the newspaper enough money to support the internships.

University of North Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications dean Jean Folkerts said the Philadelphia newspaper told her that each school that pays is guaranteed to have one of the Inquirer's 12 internships.

Folkerts said UNC's program has at least 200 students who intern every summer. "There is no way the School can fund those - nor should internships be funded by university journalism programs."

She said UNC will not be participating in the Inquirer's internship program and that she hopes other news organizations do not adopt the Inquirer's approach to internships.
