Detroit Free Press Photojournalists Win Two National Emmys

NEW YORK, NY (September 23, 2008) – Photojournalists at the Detroit Free Press won two national Emmy Awards for work that appeared on the newspaper's Web site, "40 Years of 'Respect'" and "Pit Bulls: Companions or Killers?"

It's the newspaper's second and third national Emmy Award in just two years.

"Three Emmys in two years is quite an accomplishment by our staff and recognizes how we're moving into the future on Freep.com," newspaper vice president Paul Anger said.

The Free Press reported today that "40 Years of 'Respect'" won over entries from PBS's Frontline, NPR.org, and Web sites for The New York Times and the Washington Post in the category of arts, lifestyle, and culture.

The story was done by photographer Mandi Wright and former Free Press reporter Kelley L. Carter, edited by Kathy Kieliszewski and Brian Kaufman, and the presentation was created by Brian E. Todd and Rick Nease.

"Pit Bulls: Compannions or Killers?" won out over entries from Web sites for Getty Images and the San Jose Mercury News in the news category. The story was done by photographer Rashaun Rucker and reporter Ben Schmitt, produced by Kieliszewski and designed and presented by Todd.

The paper's managing editor for digital media, Nancy Andrews, oversaw both projects. Andrews said, "Director of photography and video Craig Porter was critical to the success of both of these video productions. He's moved a newspaper photography department to a nationally-acclaimed video department."

Dai Sugano, a photojournalist for the San Jose Mercury News, also won a national Emmy Award for his video "Uprooted." The story looked at a group of mobile home residents in Sunnyvale, CA, who were displaced. The story was produced by Richard Koci Hernandez, who left the newspaper recently for a Ford Fellowship in multimedia at UC Berkele, and the paper's director of photography Geri Migielcz. The reporter was Julie Patel.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences bestowed the honors in New York during the 29th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony Monday night at the Time Warner Center in Manhattan.

Last year "Michigan Marines: Band of Brothers" was published on the paper's Web site and it won a national Emmy for Free Press photojournalist David Gilkey and photographers and producers Stephen McGee, Kathleen Galligan, and Hugh Grannum.
