Print Sale, Fund Raisers, Net $14K For Photojournalist Tim Janicke
KANSAS CITY, MO (June 17, 2008) – A photographic print auction, barbecue, and raffles organized by the friends and co-workers of Kansas City Star photographer and writer Tim Janicke raised more than $14,000, and Star features photo editor Mary Schulte reports she was able to deliver a check for that amount to the Janicke family recently thanks to the outpouring of support and help from photojournalists around the country.
Janicke was diagnosed with brain cancer and has undergone surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. When he went onto long-term disability his company insurance was terminated. When that happened, in May Schulte and other Star journalists organized an online print sale to raise money for their colleague and his family, wife Paula and children Natasha and Andrew, with the "astronomical costs they are facing."
"They were overwhelmed and amazed at the outpouring of love from their friends and co-workers," Schulte said after delivering the check. "Thanks so much for your help."
Janicke, who first joined NPPA in 1974, has been the editor of the paper's Sunday magazine as well as an adjunct professor of photojournalism at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Communications at the University of Kansas. Previously he was also the newspaper's assistant managing editor of photography, and he's held other editing positions at the newspaper.
Photographers who wish to continue to help can still donate prints to the online print auction, as more money will be raised to help the Janicke family.
