NEWS:

1st: The Commercial Appeal, February 7, 2008
“Lives lost and tattered”
John Sale, Jim Weber and Alan Spearman.
Judges’ comments: Everything works on this page. The headline, subheads, refers and photos all live in harmony .In a dream world we would take the ad on the bottom of the page and gently nudge it elsewhere.Nice work in a deadline situation.

2nd: The Palm Beach Post, March 29, 2008
“At 100, She rules”
Mark Edelson and Rangelique Moultrie-McCray with photos by Amanda Voisard and Post archive photos.
Judges’ comments: Great storytelling and photo editing. Good use of archived imagery to add information and bring the page alive. The secondary story on the right competes with the main photo though.

3rd: The Los Angeles Times, February 15, 2008
“Friday’s Skid Row Kids”
Robert St. John and Michael Robinson Chavez.
Judges’ comments: Great photography grabs the readers’ attention. Emotional and interesting.

FEATURE:

1st: The Virginian-Pilot, Jan 3, 2008
“The good old days in Cradock”
Team.
Judges' comments: Nicely done page, well laid out. Having the faces on the fold is a problem, but as far as the page as a unit, the photos are good. There is plenty of white space. Even the fonts are nice. One question which arose was why were there three fonts used on the top right hand corner.

2nd: The Los Angeles Times. March 4, 2008
“Southland to Mecca”
Mary Cooney, Irfan Khan and Kelli Sullivan.
Judges' comments: The photos are great. Very National Geographic. And it's great to see them so large. The layout is a little heavy on the bottom and left; more white space would have helped to make the grey column of text less intimidating.

3rd: The Palm Beach Post/La Palma. February 20, 2008.
“El arte perdido”
Bruce R. Bennett and Mark Edelson.
Judges' comments: Classic design and layout with nice portraits.

Honorable mentions:

The Commercial Appeal, March 23, 2008
“Senseless Streets”
John Sale and Mike Brown.

The Virginian-Pilot. March 23, 2008
“Sullivan Anderson”
Team.

The Los Angeles Times, January 13, 2008.
“Waves of Steel”
Cindy Hively, Paul Gonzales and Ken Hively.

PICTURE PAGE:

1st: The Virginian-Pilot, January 5, 2008
“Violence in Kenya”
Team.
Judges’ comments: This was the clear winner to us.  The design, photo editing, white space, etc. all work well together.

2nd: The Los Angeles Times, March 30, 2008
“How They Came To Be”
Cindy Hively and Paul Gonzales with photos by Steve Schapiro.
Judges’ comments: All the pictures worked together on this page.  Every one was there for a reason and each added to the others around it.  Clean design brings it all together.

3rd: The Virginian-Pilot, March 22, 2008
“Protesting Chinese rule”
Team.
Judges’ comments: Same philosophy as the first place winner.  Switching the dominant photo with the one on the bottom left would make this page even stronger.  Again, great variety of imagery and white space to let the pictures breath and speak individually.

Honorable mentions:

The Virginian Pilot, February 2, 2008
“Pelican Pick-up”
Team.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch, March 24, 2008
“Going Back Taking Stock”
Emily Rasinski, Huy R. Mach, Sid Hastings and Joan McKenna.

The Palm Beach Post / La Palma, March 28, 2008
“Regreso del Heroe”
Mark Edelson with photos by The Associated Press and Getty Images.

The Palm Beach Post / La Palma, March 7, 2008
“Juego Aspero”
Mark Edelson with photos by The Associated Press and Getty Images.

The Palm Beach Post / La Palma, February 8, 2008
“La serie del Caribe”
Mark Edelson with photos by The Associated Press, E.F.E., and Getty Images.

SPORTS:

1st: The San Jose Mercury News, February 4, 2008
“18 and no”
LiPo Ching, Tiffany Pease and Tom Hauck (Bloomberg News).
Judges’ comments: The great headline couples with the strong dominant image to tell the story right off the bat.  A lot of information is offered near the bottom, but is laid out well and is very consumable.

2nd: The Commercial Appeal, February 24, 2008
“Got their number”
Jeff McAdory, Mark Weber and Mike Brown.
Judges’ comments: Great game coverage.  Both images are strong and work well together.  A lot of information is laid out well.  We had to search for the score though, why not make it more prominent?

3rd: The Palm Beach Post / La Palma, February 22, 2008
“Estiramiento”
Mark Edelson with photos by The Associated Press and Getty Images.
Judges’ comments: Picture editing took this into the top three.  Great photos play off each other, almost creating a visual rhythm down the page.

Honorable mentions:

The Palm Beach Post / La Palma, February 1, 2008
“Un Nuevo ‘look’”
Mark Edelson and Damon Higgins.

The St. Petersburg Times, February 2, 2008
