NEW YORK, NY (May 1, 2008) – The Pierre and Alexandra Boulat Association has been established and a reception tonight in Brooklyn will mark its launch, the VII agency has announced.
A grant will be awarded for a photography project that "seeks to keep the spirit of the father and daughter alive."
The deadline for applying for the first Pierre and Alexandra Boulat Grant is July 1.
VII Agency, the group of photojournalists that Alexandra Boulat was a member of when she died in 2007, says the annual grant will be made to a photographer whose "story must be told but that cannot find support from within the media." The Association will also support the education of young photographers.
The Association's board consists of Annie Boulat, the widow of Pierre Boulat and Alexandra's mother, who is the founder of the picture agency Cosmos in Paris; Gary Knight, of VII Agency; Antoinette Boulat; and Jean-Francois Leroy.
The reception tonight at VII Dumbo on Jay Street in Brooklyn begins at 6 p.m. EST.
Those who wish to join the Boulat Association may do so as an individual for 50 Euro, or as a company for 100 Euro. Additional donations are welcome, VII says.
Alexandra Boulat died October 5, 2007 in hospital in Paris after suffering an aneurism in late June 2007 while on assignment in Ramallah. She was around photojournalism since childhood, being the daughter of Life magazine photographer Pierre Boulat. He died January 11, 1998, in Nemours, France, at the age of 73. He worked for Life for more than two decades, beginning with a photograph he took of a tornado over Paris that was published in Life in 1953. He had started his career at the Paris magazine Samedi Soir in 1945.
To apply for in the inaugural Pierre and Alexandra Boulat Grant, photographers should submit a one-page proposal with a portfolio of 20 pictures. VII says a first committee will screen the applicants in Paris, and the final selection will be made in Perpignan by a jury of photojournalism industry leaders who are attending Visa pour L'image.
