NEW YORK, NY (April 29, 2008) – A new photographic exhibit of more than 80 historical images from the Associated Press called "The American President" opened simultaneously this week in New York and Washington, and on May 9 the show travels to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in Athens.
The photographs show American presidents at war and at ease, in victory and defeat, running for office and leading the nation while confronting national crises and facing personal scandals, AP says. Included in the exhibit are some Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs, including Paul Vathis' view of John F. Kennedy walking at Camp David with his predecessor, Dwight D. Eisenhower; Ron Edmonds' sequence of photographs documenting the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan; and White House photographs taken by J. Scott Applewhite and others during Bill Clinton's 1998 impeachment battle.
Included in the show are new images as well, from this year's campaign as Senators Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama run for the Oval Office.
Organized by AP's Corporate Communications department, the traveling exhibit will visit schools and college campuses in the coming year, including stops at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma in Norman (September 8 through October 3); the University of Connecticut (October 10 through November 7); and the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University in Ames (October 13 through November 1).
The openings were at the Georgetown University's Bunn International Center (ICC) Galeria in Washington, and in the rotunda of the Federal Hall National Memorial in New York City, a National Park Service landmark that is opposite the New York Stock Exchange.
The Georgetown exhibit is open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to midnight daily through May 9.
The New York City exhibit is open through January 31, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
