Howard Chapnick Grant Deadline Is July 15
NEW YORK, NY (April 11, 2008) – The International Center of Photography wants to remind photojournalists and editors that the deadline to apply for the 2008 Howard Chapnick Grant is July 15, 2008.
The annual grant of $5,000 USD is not intended for the creation of photographs, but in support of the ancillary field of photojournalism, such as editing, research, education and management. Photographic projects will continue to be funded by the main grant of the Smith Fund, the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography.
In 1996 the Smith Fund announced the Chapnick Grant to encourage and support leadership in fields ancillary to photojournalism, to honor the memory of Howard Chapnick's enormous contribution to photography. The Fund's Board of Trustees will give special consideration to project that promote social change or serve significant concerns of photojournalism.
The application form for the Chapnick Grant is available on the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Web site at here.
Chapnick was president of Black Star photo agency from 1964 through 1989. During his career, which spanned for 50 years, Chapnick discovered, nurtured, and promoted some of the world's most talented photojournalists. Howard Chapnick died in 1996 and his wife Jeanette Chapnick died in 2007. As a couple, the Chapnicks spent much of their lives supporting photojournalists. "The Chapnicks really cared for you and your profession," Peter Howe wrote after Jeanette died. "It wasn't a job, it was a commitment. They were among the last of their generation of 20th-century humanists, and they both passionately believed that photojournalism existed to serve humanity."
Applications for the Chapnick Grant should be submitted to: The Howard Chapnick Grant, c/o International Center of Photography, 1133 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY, 10036. For more information please contact Yukiko Launois via eMail.
