Final Winners In 2008 Best Of Photojournalism Picture Editing Categories Announced

 

One of Brad Loper's winning BOP Picture Editing pagesATHENS, OH (April 8, 2008) - Judging of the final entries in NPPA's 2008 Best Of Photojournalism competition has wrapped up with the completion of the Picture Editing and Best Use Of Photography categories at Ohio University's School of Visual Communication in Athens. Coordinated by OU's Stan Alost and VisCom director Terry Eiler, NPPA's judges went through more than 1,200 entries over four days last week, awarding more than 100 prizes and picking the following winners:

The Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year (Individual) is Brad Loper of The Dallas Morning News. Second place is Mary Cooney of the Los Angeles Times, and third place is Dan Habib of The Concord Monitor. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Janet Reeves of The Rocky Mountain News, and to Mark Edelson of The Palm Beach Post.

The Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year (Team) is The Dallas Morning News. Second Place is the Los Angeles Times, and third place is the San Jose Mercury News. Honorable Mentions were awarded to the teams from The Rocky Mountain News and The Palm Beach Post.

The Magazine Picture Editor of the Year is Jim Colton from Sports Illustrated. Second place is MaryAnne Golon from Time magazine, and third place is Carol Nakagawa from The Seattle Times.

In the Best Use Of Pictures (Circulation less than 75,000), first place is The Concord Monitor. Second place is The Naples Daily News, and third place is The Register-Guard. Honorable Mentions were awarded to The Albuquerque Tribune, and the Midland Daily News.

In the Best Use Of Pictures (Circulation more than 75,000), first place is the Los Angeles Times. Second place is The New York Times, and third place is The Dallas Morning News.

In the Best Use Of Pictures by Magazines category, first place is Saveur magazine, second place is Time magazine, and third place is Sports Illustrated.

In the Newspaper Front Page category, first place goes to the picture editing team from The Pioneer Press in St. Paul, MN. Second place is David Grewe from the Hartford Courant, and third place is John Sale from the Commercial Appeal. Honorable Mentions were awarded to the picture editing team from The Pioneer Press, and to Michele McNally from The New York Times.

In the Newspaper News Section (Other than Front Page) category, first place is Michele McNally of The New York Times. Second and third place is Mark Edelson of The Palm Beach Post. An Honorable Mention was also awarded to Edelson.

Second place is Geri Migielicz of the San Jose Mercury News, and third place is Colin Crawford of the Los Angeles Times. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Mark Holm of the Albuquerque News, Migielicz, Rob Romig from The Register Guard, and Holm.

In the Newspaper Sports Project category, first place is Dan Habib of the Concord Monitor. Second place is Mark Holm from The Albuquerque Tribune, and third place is Brad Loper from The Dallas Morning News.

In the Single-Page Newspaper Documentary Photojournalism Project category, Brad Loper of The Dallas Morning News sweeps the category winning first, second, and third place. Loper also won an Honorable Mention in this category, along with Calvin Hom of the Los Angeles Times.

In the Multiple-Page Newspaper Documentary Photojournalism Project category, first place is Brad Loper of the Dallas Morning News. Second place is Mary Cooney of the Los Angeles Times, and third place is Janet Reeves of The Rocky Mountain News. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Norman Shafer of The Virginian-Pilot, to Dan Habib of the Concord Monitor, and to Bill Kelley of The Virginian-Pilot.

In the Newspaper Illustrative Single Page category, first place is Mark Edelson of The Palm Beach Post. Second place is Calvin Hom of the Los Angeles Times, and third place is Leanne Burden Seidel of The Boston Globe. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Edelson of The Palm Beach Post for two (2) entries in this category.

In the Newspaper Illustrative Multiple Page category, first place is Mark Edelson of The Palm Beach Post. Second and third place, as well as an Honorable Mention, were awarded to John Sale of The Commercial Appeal.

In the Newspaper Special Section or Reprint category, first place is Janet Reeves of The Rocky Mountain News. Second place is Aaron J. Latham of the Arizona Daily Star, and third palce is Mary Cooney of the Los Angeles Times. An Honorable Mention was awarded to Colin Crawford of the Los Angeles Times.

In the Newspaper Recurring Feature or Series category, first place is Mark Edelson of The Palm Beach Post. Second and third place is Michele McNally of The New York Times. An Honorable Mention was awarded to Edelson from The Palm Beach Post.

In the Newspaper Single-Page News category, the first place winner is Geri Migielicz of the San Jose Mercury News. Second place is Colin Crawford of the Los Angeles Times, and third place is also Crawford. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Migielicz from San Jose and to Brad Loper from The Dallas Morning News.

In the Newspaper Multiple-Page News category, the first place winner is Colin Crawford from the Los Angeles Times. Second place is Geri Migielicz from the San Jose Mercury News, and third place is Michele McNally from The New York Times. An Honorable Mention was also awarded to McNally.

In the Magazine Cover category, first place is Jim Colton from Sports Illustrated magazine. Second place is Alice Gabriner from Time, and third place is Simon Barnett from Newsweek. An Honorable Mention was awarded to Colton.

In the Magazine News Story/Multiple category, first place is Alice Gabriner from Time magazine. Second and third place is Simon Barnett from Newsweek. Also Honorable Mentions were awarded for two (2) other entries in this category to Gabriner from Time.

In the Magazine Story Opener/Single category, first and second place is Alice Gabriner of Time magazine. Third place is Robert Csere of Tyzden. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Csere (2) and Gabriner (1).

In the Magazine Illustrative Story/Multiple category, first place is Carol Nakagawa of The Seattle Times. Second place is Bruce Moyer from the St. Petersburg Times, and third place is Dietmar Liz Lepiorz of Time magazine.

In the Magazine Sports Story category, first place is Jim Colton from Sports Illustrated. Second place is Steve Fine from Sports Illustrated. There were no other awards in this category.

In the Magazine Personality Profile or Lifestyle Story/Multiple category, first place is Crary Pullen of Time magazine. Second place is Robert Csere of Tyzden, and third place is Dietmar Liz Lepiorz of Time magazine. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Crary Pullen from Time and Simon Barnett from Newsweek.

In the Magazine Recurring Feature or Series category, first place is Jim Colton from Sports Illustrated. Second place is Scott Mc Kiernan from DOUBLEtruck magazine, and third place is Kevin Vandivier from Texas Highways magazine.
