BOP TV Contest Judging Starts Next Week, Along With Free Training for Video Journalists

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (February 29, 2008) - Judging in the television categories in the National Press Photographers Association's 2008 Best Of Photojournalism contest begins next week at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, FL.

Al Tompkins

This year there's a special bonus: Poynter's Al Tompkins will host a live, inside look at the judging Monday through Friday at noon Eastern Standard Time in a series called "Lessons From A Contest." The daily conversation with the judges begings Monday, March 3, at 12 noon EST online at www.newsu.org/NPPAbroadcast08.

"I will interview nationally known photojournalists and editors who are judging this year's contest. We will find out what impressed the judges, what ethical issues arose in this year's entries, and how the backpack journalist trend is affecting photojournalism," Tompkins said.

"Again this year, judges will look at more Web-based video than ever. These 15-minute News University Webinars with the judges are perfect and free training sessions for your staff and for TV journalism classrooms."

The Webinars will be archived on the Web site, so you can still see them at your convenience if you can't catch the "live" broadcast.

The winning videos will be posted on the Poynter Web site starting on Tuesday, March 4.

The NPPA Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year, the Video Editor of the Year, and the three Stations of the Year (for markets small, medium, and large) will be announced on Friday.

Tompkins is the author "Al's Morning Meeting" on Poynter Online, and he's the Broadcast & Online group leader for the Institute. He's also the author of "Aim for the Heart: A Guide for TV Producers and Reporters."
